Acantharea Invitation Suite
Acantharea are a class of radiolarian protozoa, or zooplankton, that make beautiful mineral skeletons in geometric shapes. The scientific drawings featured in the Acantharea suite were done by Ernst Haeckel, a German biologist and artist who discovered and named hundreds of species in the late 19th and early 20th century. These specific drawings come from his book, Kunstformen der Natur, and one of his reports from the H.M.S. Challenger, a scientific expedition in 1872 that lay the foundation for the modern field of oceanography.
